Meta Launches Threads: A Text-Based Conversation App to Rival Twitter

Meta New App Threads

Meta, the owner of Facebook, has announced the launch of a new app called Threads which is set to rival Twitter. The app, which will be linked to Instagram, is already available for pre-order in the Apple App Store and will go live for users on Thursday.

Threads is described as a "text-based conversation app… where communities come together" and is the latest chapter in the rivalry between Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter's new owner, Elon Musk.

The interface of Threads is similar to that of Twitter, and the app encourages people to "connect over conversation" and "share your point of view" in text-based short posts. Similarly to Twitter, Threads appears to have sharing options that include a heart symbol to 'favorite' posts, a reply function, a reshare button similar to the retweet function, and the ability to forward posts to private messages.

It is interesting to note that the promotional images also appear to show a verified user's blue tick carrying over from Instagram to Threads. Verification is a key point of contention on Twitter, where Musk's leadership stripped users of blue ticks and monetized the service.

The upcoming launch of Threads is set to shake up the social media landscape, and it will be interesting to see how it develops and competes with other platforms. With its focus on text-based conversations and community building, Threads will likely appeal to users who are looking for a more intimate and personal way to connect with others online.

As social media continues to evolve, it is exciting to see new players entering the game and challenging the status quo. Whether Threads will be able to take on Twitter and other established platforms and emerge as a true rival remains to be seen, but it is clear that the competition is heating up.
